Hanoi’s students won the third prize in the 50th UPU International Letter-Writing Competition

The 50th UPU International Letter-Writing Competition (in 2021) with the topic: “Write a letter to a family member about your experience of the COVID-19 pandemic”.

The competition was launched and placed nationwide from December 2020 to March 2021. The Organizing Committee has received more than 1 million letters from students of 63 participating cities and provinces.

Most letters shared their experiences when they had to off school and stay home, were unfamiliar with online learning but were reunited with their families, being close and sharing their feelings with their grandparents, parents, siblings... Many letters were written to their loved ones with sincere, simple and touching emotions, such as: To a baby born during the COVID pandemic; To mother who is a doctor in the frontline against the epidemic; To "adoptive father" who is an officer of the border guard station; To grandmother telling about a father who is a naval soldier in Truong Sa; Letter telling about own experience when sewing hand-made masks for doctors in the hospital...

The winning letters are ones with clear messages, attractive writing style, elaborate presentation, and beautiful handwriting.

After 5 rounds of judging, the National Jury selected 110 letters to the final round. Results: 1 First Prize, 3 Second Prize, 5 Third Prize, 30 Consolation Prize, 65 Promising Writer Award; The Organizing Committee awarded 6 commendation letters to disabilities students with good entries.

Students won the First and Second Prizes were awarded the Creative Youth Badge by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.

Ms. Dao Anh Thu, class 8A2 of Nguyen Huy Tuong Secondary School, Dong Anh District, Hanoi won the National First Prize with the idea of ​​​​a letter sent to a baby girl who was born while her mother was being treated for COVID at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases to express the difficulties and hardships of the doctors and nurses that being proud of their contribution in the epidemic prevention in Vietnam.

Especially, Dao Anh Thu's letter was translated into French and sent to the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and won the Third International Prize.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan said that at the 27th Congress of the UPU held in August 2021 in Ivory Coast, UPU announced the international students won the prizes, including Vietnam's Ms. Dao Anh Thu won the Third Prize. Not only a great honor for Ms. Thu personally, it is also the honor and pride of all Vietnamese students in general.

The Deputy Minister affirmed that the competition has been always received the attention, support and active participation of schools and students nationwide. They have brought the message of Vietnamese children on global issues to the world, and at the same time demonstrated the bravery, intelligence and humanity of Vietnamese students. Thereby helping Vietnam become one of the few countries with the highest achievements at the competition.

Topic of the UPU 51st International Letter-Writing Competition related to the climate crisis

The 51st UPU International Letter-Writing Competition (in 2022) with the topic “Write a letter to someone influential explaining why and how they should take action on the climate crisis” associated with the United Nations Conference on Climate Change - COP26 that was just held in Glasgow, UK.

According to Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, this year's contest topic is associated with the United Nations Conference on Climate Change - COP26 that was just held in Glasgow, UK. The 26th Conference with the participation of many presidents, leaders of many countries to discuss, make political resolutions, solutions to climate change and related issues. The topic selection of the 51st International Letter-Writing Competition is associated with flashpoint issues at COP26 to create opportunities for young people to voice their thoughts, their wishes on the global issue of the climate crisis and their expectations of practical action of national leaders in settling the climate crisis.

According to the rules, the participants of the 51st UPU International Letter-Writing Competition (in 2022) are Vietnamese students aged from 9 to 15 years old. The competition period: December 2, 2021 to March 2, 2022 (according to postmarks).

A recipient is Youth Newspapers Tien Phong, No. 5 Hoa Ma Street, Pham Dinh Ho ward, Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi – 11611.

Letters must be no more than 800 words length, be handwritten on one side of the paper. In particular, letters must be put in a stamped envelope sending via Post.

In order to bring more writing ideas for students, at the ceremony, the representatives of the National Jury and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment shared many topics and techniques for writing UPU letters. Accordingly, the topic of this year's competition asks people to participate in solving a global flashpoint issue that we are experiencing and facing at different levels of all countries around the world every single day and hour: climate change, climate crisis or climate disaster. People are members of the ecosystem, participating, providing specific solutions and actions to protect the earth is our right and also responsibility.
